FOUR CHAIRS

"A FAB-FOUR"
A PLACE WHERE YOU AND YOUR BESTIE'S CAN CHILLAX

Create a special place in your home where you don't have the formulaic set-up of a sofa, two club-chairs and pair of fauteuils...  A grouping of  only  four super-comfortable club chairs for the intimate times with good friends.

Each Guest A Master of His Own Domain...

This pee-in-your-pants grouping with those amazing sheep-skin club chairs ROCKS!  They're centered around a low cocktail table - perfect for serving drinks and Cheezewhiz.
The area also serves as a nice reading area for more than one member of your home.
LOVE!

This clean, soft-contemporary grouping with the pony-hide ottoman and wool-boucle covered club chairs is the perfect place to sit with friends - put your feet up, drink a martini and discuss why your marriages bore you so...

A  Fab4  on a glass porch becomes the place where you entertain another couple or sit with your kids and catch up on their lives over the Sunday paper.

One end of this living room is for the  Fab4  - the cozy end!
Swivel chairs with views to the outside or just watching TV, everyone's in their own chair!  I'm kinda thinkin' they should've left the swing-arm TV out, not pushed behind the curtain...

Architectural and sleek, this modern living room is for intimate times with your friends. Let other areas be for the masses, but reserve a place where you're close and can chat easily.

A vestibule becomes your intimate spot for a  Fab4  or three...
The chairs don't have to match and it shouldn't feel like it's a dining area either.

Away from the larger part of the living room where you entertain larger groups is your intimate  Fab4 !  The two small, portable tables are perfect for drinks as they can be moved around to accommodate - add some swanky hor d'oeuvres, some Etta James and your ready to chill with your frienemies.
aaaat laassst...

This cozy library has a 28" high 'center' table surrounded with four linen-covered club chairs. When Homer and Marge come over you simply take away the accessories and put out some Chex-mix, a six-pack of Duff Beer and voila! a cozy place where your friends are close - but in their own chair which is perfect for communication.
(Guests should be no more than 6 feet apart for a comfortable conversation).

Fernandez, a brilliant, ever-evolving designer, has used a 26" high cocktail table with four woven-raffia, sled-bottom chairs. They're  casually arranged so two, three or four can be pulled into the chat group or turned around to debate whether that rower has a 6 or 8 pack...

This eclectic mish-mosh works fairly well.
The antique-style wing-chairs (two different pair) are covered in the same fabric and mixed with a modern table and carpet which looks great!  What makes it work is the well-edited pieces and the traditional envelope of the Georgian paneling.

Got a faux Chateau?
All those huge-ass rooms and nowhere to talk that doesn't echo?   Call 9-1-1 ASAP!
A Fab4  is needed at Mansion Hollow Bluffs Lane immediately!
Two large club-chairs, two fauteuils and a small cocktail table create un atmosphere intime...

For 25+ years I've been a huge (stalk-ish) fan of Shelton-Mindel; they've always lead the cutting edge of clean-lined, no-fuss design.
Their Mid-Century Modern  Fab4  has a pair of matching chairs and two additional mismatched chairs - yet, all of the same period.
Notice the dual sofas at one end for larger groups in the same room for larger gatherings.

This casual area overlooking the Hudson River is a little bit of everything - gathering spot, viewing area, bar/lounge seating, lunch table, etc. The super casual feeling adds to everyone's comfort.

Waldo, again, shows us how to create areas for conversation.
The  Fab4  by the fireplace is perfect - if the number of guests goes up - you're not too far from the other seating area.

Most'a  y'all live in your family rooms or library's leaving your formal living empty with an unused piano in the corner....
However, with kids, the TV that never gets turned off and exposure to the kitchen why not make your living room a  Fab4  so you and your adult friends can escape the mayhem?

Isn't the library someplace which we all feel comfortable in?
A place to take friends, share a bottle of wine, watch TV or read.

This traditional furniture feels quite updated in the monochromatic tones. The swivel-loungers can be also used for watching TV.
Check out that ottoman with soft and hard surfaces, brilliant for this type of arrangement.

BOOM, dat's what I'm talkin' bout!!
Giorgio Armani's Swiss chalet makes my shorts tight - it's very Armani - clean, lean and tightly designed. His bar area sports a lower than normal pedestal table and four leather and wood chairs.
Sooo chic!

This  Fab4  is too "staged" looking - those chairs look like they're from a horror movie like "Dinner with Martha Stewart"!
Wouldn't four upholstered chairs be perfect in this causal, lightroom?  Even four Kennedy Rockers would be fun in there!
If you can't use it, lose it...

This updated Victorian townhouse has the typical narrow living rooms.
A  Fab4  is perfect for this type of shituation!

I think this is sooo handsome with the natural materials!
If you have more than four guests over, a  Fab4  is perfect as guests can walk around the grouping, sit on the arms and move in and out of the grouping easily - unlike a sectional or dual sofas.

This is a home I staged and 'flipped' in Palm Beach which had a whole wall of French doors going out to a pool area. I positioned the four swivel-chairs adjacent to the doors so they could face each other, the room, the fireplace  or  the garden - it was very successful as it had such flexibility (patting self on back here).

These big-ass zebra covered wing-chairs create some architectural balance in a room which has high ceilings and large windows. Notice that the zebra is the only pattern in this space, everything else is textural and simple, otherwise it would be too busy and look cluttered.

TAKE FAB-FOUR OUTSIDE

This seaside porch uses a  Fab4  instead of the ubiquitous sofa-and-two-chair schtick - thank God!
The armless chairs make for easy maneuvering and if there's a crowd two people can pile onto one chair - it's the beach, don't worry, be happy!

 Hipster-licious!
The smell of Ban de Soleil - the roar of the ocean - a doobie - and three of your best buds....
right freakin' on dude!

A traditional "southern-style" porch with portiere's and four wicker  chairs around a contemporary cocktail table.
They could lose the hide & schmaltzy chandelier, however... jus' sayin'...

This California-style deck with the fireplace and surrounding banquette is the perfect place for a  Fab4 !  The chairs can be rearranged to accommodate more guests if needed.  But most importantly - it's not cluttered with all different sized furniture which looks like hell outdoors.

Symmetry creates space! This  Fab4  is the main focus of this patio, and the most used. The peripheral seating areas accommodate larger groups.  The mirror on the chimney must go...

A FEW FAB-FOUR RULES

  • ALWAYS USE THE SAME FABRIC ON ALL FOUR CHAIRS IF THEY'RE IDENTICAL
  • IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT THE FRAMES ARE, JUST MAKE SURE ALL FOUR ARE COMFORTABLE!
  • DON'T HAVE A DINING HEIGHT (30") TABLE OR IT WILL LOOK LIKE A DINING TABLE - DUH! THE TABLE NEEDS TO BE NO HIGHER THAN 28" - LOWER IS BETTER!
  • SWIVEL CHAIRS ARE GREAT WHEN THERE'S OTHER SEATING AROUND OR A TV.
  • LOOSE SEAT AND BACK CUSHIONS ARE THE MOST COMFORTABLE, BUT LOOK THE SLOPPIEST WHEN NOT IN USE.
  • THE AVERAGE CLUB CHAIR IS 32-42" DEEP BY 30-38" WIDE
  • IF POSSIBLE, FIND A CHAIR WITH A HIGH ENOUGH BACK THAT YOU CAN REST YOUR HEAD ON IT WHEN YOU SCOOT DOWN AND USE THE OTTOMAN; MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE FOR TALL PEOPLE.
  • DON'T GET SMALL, UPRIGHT CHAIRS, IT WILL BE LIKE SITTING IN DINING CHAIRS, WHICH DEFEATS THE ENTIRE POINT!
  • AN OTTOMANS TOP SHOULDN'T BE HIGHER THAN THE SEAT OF THE CHAIR, OTHERWISE IT'S UNCOMFORTABLE TO SIT WITH YOUR FEET UP.
  • OTTOMAN'S SHOULD BE BIG ENOUGH TO ACCOMMODATE FOUR PEOPLES FEET  COMFORTABLY, THEY DIDN'T COME OVER TO PLAY FOOTSIE...
  • OTTOMAN'S SHOULD BE UPHOLSTERED IN SOMETHING DURABLE, SO YOU WONT FREAK-OUT IF IT GETS STAINED OR MARRED.
  • A COFFEE TABLE IS BETTER IF IT'S OK TO PUT YOUR FEET ON
  • A CARPET UNDER THE ENTIRE GROUP IS PREFERABLE AS PEOPLE MAY TAKE THEIR SHOES OFF
  • CARPET IS ALSO GOOD FOR ACOUSTICS, KEEPING THE ECHO AND SOUNDS SOFTER IN THE ROOM
  • THE FABRICS OR LEATHER MUST TO BE PLEASANT TO THE TOUCH
  • DO NOT USE RECLINER OR FLIP-BACK CHAIRS, YOU'RE NOT THERE TO SLEEP, IT'S A CONVERSATION AREA FOR FRIENDS - NO ONE WANTS YOUR FEET ELEVATED UP TO THEIR FACE.

You can do it, I'm here to help!
